![]() ![]() The problem with the AudioEngine D1 is that every once in a while it spews forth a burst of digital noise at full volume (regardless of volume setting) that frankly. I used a cheapo USB DAC previous to this one but the sound was very poor. For listeners who are used to the hyped-up upper registers of many inexpensive DACs the D1 may seem dark or lacking in upper-frequency air. My AudioEngine A2 speakers at last live up to expectations and my Sony MDR-V6 headphones also sound great. And while the D1’s harmonic signature doesn’t warm up the sound, its lack of coloration, especially in the upper registers, makes for a very low-fatigue yet revealing presentation. The PC isn't crashing or giving me any errors. When using the ASUS Essence STX II Audio Center, I hear a distinctive "click" in my case (I'm going to assume it's the sound card clicking) when I switch from Analog Out source (headphone, 2 speakers, FP headphone, FP 2 speakers) so I'm not sure if that's the problem. I've disabled the on-board audio through the BIOS, uninstalled the on-board audio drivers as well as not installing the NVidia audio drivers. Apparently this is known from audioengines perspective, and theyve specifically stated in their manual that one should set the buffer setting to a minimum. I bought this soundcard to drive my Sennheiser HD800s (300 Ω). Sound quality is great, but there are stuttering issues with foobar. I've installed a new ASUS Sound Card Essence STX II and of the 3 possible sound outputs (analog, headphone, S/PDIF), only the S/PDIF works and while ONLY connected to an external DAC (Audioengine D1 24-Bit DAC), which defeats the purpose of this soundcard.
